A Question of Honor
Government draws its just powers from
the consent of the governed.
This simple declaration, dismissing out of hand the divine right of kings and princes, shattered history.
Government by consent of the governed was made real here, in this country, more than two centuries ago. By it,
the purpose and character of a citizenry emerged as the source and grounding of just government.
In this emergence, truthfulness was essential, a common respect for the truth and an assumed access to the
facts. How else could just government endure?
Enter the Bully Liar, and his Bully Lies. The lies of the Bully Liar are meant to disorient the listener so as to share in their telling. Worse than misleading, they are
corrupting.
Donald Trump lies every day. Indeed, his most oft spoken lie - that he won the 2020 election - threatens the political stability of the very nation he now seeks to lead.
So, here is the question: For just how long can a democracy built on its citizens’ purpose and character, on its
national honor, endure the leadership of a
compulsive liar?
Now we must be careful with this word, honor. But where are we without it,
without honor, without purpose and integrity and courage, too?
Indeed, honor stands as the concluding word of the Declaration of Independence, the Founders pledging to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
So, to hold this nation as having honor is to claim for it no more than that which its Founders had risked everything. And what is at risk now is no less than the continuing existence of the democracy they created…and left to our care and keeping.
Make no mistake: Donald Trump is a liar, a demagogue at whose urging the Constitution has been recast such that the presidency enjoys absolute immunity for all official acts.
Having already spoken of the arrest of those who will have opposed him in the 2024 election, he now speaks of being the protector of all the oppressed, a big brother of sorts. Incredible.
There is truly a barbarian at the gate, right here, right now, and with a national political party nomination clutched firmly in hand. Where character and honor are most needed, he brings only deceit and disgrace.
It is time to brave up, to see Donald Trump for the bully and the liar he surely is: A man without honor seeking to lead a country built on the honor of its Founders, a would-be king who is, in exact fact, their nightmare.
The moment of truth is now upon us. Yes, right now. Either we show the courage and character of the Founders to preserve our freedom and our liberty, or surrender them both to a bullying demagogue, leaving to ourselves only the unbearable anguish of their loss.
What is first required of us, then, in this hour of so great a peril, is a deep respect for and an absolute insistence upon the truth and truthfulness from
those who would lead us. With such, we cannot fail. By this, we will have proven ourselves worthy of those on whose broad shoulders we now stand.
And if we do not so insist, if we succumb to the Bully Liar and his Bully Lies, there will be no words to describe what is certain to follow, none save two – chaos and misery. And they will fall in equal measure on each and all of us to suffer and to regret.
§
On Honor…
Honor is a state of mind, an ever present awareness that better does not just happen and
an unyielding resolve to see that it does.
Honor has a soul.
We call it hope, a yearning over and through time for
an enrichment in the human condition.
Honor is quiet, in crisis or in calm.
Unquestioned in character and courage, it is
from honor that just leadership emerges.
Honor speaks in core values -
none being greater in purpose and effect than
Individual Worth and Personal Responsibility.
Honor searches for meaning and impact in a life,
and sees to its sharing once found.
Honor is wisdom actualized.
